How Does Acupuncture Work?

This is a question we get a lot from our new clients. From the way we’re used to thinking about medicine, it seems counterintuitive that sticking needles in you could somehow benefit your health. I’ve had people ask if there’s any kind of medicine on the needles, to ask if it is outright voodoo. (The answer is no to both).

What is qi (chee)?

A simple question, but it takes a little explaining. Traditionally, we refer to the body's energy circulation, something we call qi. Put simply, when qi is blocked, or deficient, we get pain, we get anxiety, and we get illness. In doing acupuncture, we are helping to move and balance the flow of qi. The only problem is, we have no concept of qi in Mainstream medicine, so some call for a more specific answer.

Modern Theories

That has been the focus of many modern studies into acupuncture. There are indications that inserting needles triggers your body’s healing capabilities. It releases neurotransmitters that make you feel good and relieves pain. It also calms the nervous system when it’s overly stressed. One theory on how this works is called “micro-trauma.” The idea is, the needles cause a mild injury that activates the body’s healing response. However, they don’t actually cause much damage, so those resources go toward healing the body’s other problems, the reason you’re coming in for acupuncture. To put it very generally, acupuncture triggers and directs your body’s ability to heal itself.

How Acupuncture Works Best

One thing we do know about acupuncture is that more often than not, it does work. Meaning, it can provide relief for a lot of conditions. Moreover, it works best as a series of treatments, close together, over a period of time. That can mean anywhere from 5-20 treatments, depending on the situation. After the first few sessions, your practitioner will be able to give a better estimate, depending on how you’re reacting. That means deciding to get acupuncture, is often a decision that requires a bit of commitment on your part, so it pays to find a practitioner you can trust.
