The NADA ear protocol was developed in the 1970s to help the community around the borough of the Bronx, in New York City. Lincoln Hospital had a detox unit devoted to helping people break free from drug addiction, using this simple holistic treatment.
The procedure was developed over time by Michael Smith, MD, LAc. His work was based on the research of the Chinese neurosurgeon H.L. Wen. What he developed was a protocol using specific acupuncture points on the ears, that could help addiction patients in several ways, such as:
Reduced cravings and withdrawal symptoms
More relaxation and less stress
Better sleep
Better mood and overall well-being
A procedure that is natural and non-invasive.
The procedure is very simple. We use just the same five specific points in each ear. It is safe, simple, and effective.
It was first developed to help those suffering from opioid addiction but has since been proven effective for all kinds of addiction, from shopping to smoking and everything in between. A usual protocol is one treatment, a couple of times per week. This can go on for as long as is needed. That usually amounts to more or less than 3 weeks.
It’s inexpensive too, with most clinics charging about $20 per session. (Keep in mind the money you’ll save being free from addiction. Plus the benefits to your health). A pack of cigarettes in New York is easily 15 dollars. Of course, we can’t guarantee results. But in my experience, when trying to break free from addiction, it pays to keep trying until you succeed. So try different methods and don’t give up.
Ear acupuncture safely moderates the nervous system without the danger of interacting with other medications. Side effects are minimal; maybe some dizziness or discomfort to the ear. Treatments can be done as often as once per day, with a couple of times per week being effective. We can also enhance the effect between sessions with the use of "ear seeds". (Tiny seeds held in the ear with an adhesive bandage that continues to stimulate the points.)
At Community Zen, we are set up to easily treat several ear acupuncture patients at once. Our hours are 12-7 on Wednesdays and Fridays, please give us a call or email.
