Why Are Men Less Likely to Seek Wellness Care?

I’ve been practicing acupuncture for about 16 years, and over that time, I’ve noticed I see many more women than men. If I could make an unscientific estimate, I’d say 80% of my clients have been women.  Of the men, by far the majority of them I’ve seen have been due to an accident or injury.  Rarely do I see gentlemen come in for, “wellness”, or prevention methods around stress management.

Why the hesitation?

That’s a little odd to me because I know the stress is there, and the ailments are there too.  I’ve seen the numbers.  There is no shortage of stress-related illnesses for men aged thirty to sixty.  Is it that they’re just not aware of how much acupuncture can help with these issues?  Are they skeptical?  Are they perhaps in denial?  Employing a “tough it out” mindset?

I offer you an analogy.  Would you run your car into the ground, neglecting maintenance and oil changes, etc, and expect that car to last any reasonable amount of time?  I imply that neglecting some form of appropriate self-care could be much worse.  Sure our bodies can heal themselves, but sometimes they need a boost.  The sad truth is that many of us are unaware of the effects stress is having on our bodies until it shows up as full-fledged symptoms and illness.

Acupuncture as a safe, early intervention

As an acupuncturist, I offer this.  Working with your body in a natural, drug-free way, that boosts its own abilities of resilience and recovery, triggering its abilities to heal itself.  Sometimes the best thing you can do for your health is to relax, acupuncture helps this happen on a physical and physiological level.

The Busier the Better

I am speaking directly to men with busy, active schedules.  We’ve talked in the past about yin and yang.  I’ll oversimplify it for this point.  Yin is the passive, resting energy, often associated with the feminine.  Yang is active energy, go, go, go.  I think a lot of men have an excess of this energy.  It’s certainly called for to be successful in many highly competitive professions.  I think for that reason, a lot of men emphasize this mindset, out of necessity.  I get that.

It’s All About Balance

But, also when talking about yin and yang, we know one needs some balance.  All Yang all the time, leads to burnout and serious health issues.  A total collapse that forces you to rest and repair, to be more yin.  My passion as a practitioner, is to help you avoid that.  By consciously making some time for nourishing, yin activities, you can stay balanced, and maintain that peak performance.  That’s why those in finance, athletics, law enforcement, and other highly demanding professions could greatly benefit from regular acupuncture.

Plus, at Community Zen, we make it simple.  Minimal paperwork, minimal red tape, minimal fluff.  Just fast, efficient, and healing acupuncture that works with you and your busy schedule.  Easy to book, and easy to do.  Just sit back and fall asleep in a recliner for a half-hour while these hair-thin needles do their work.  I’d love to hear from readers why they think this blockage exists.  Unless you're just afraid of needles, but we can talk about that too.
